A routine dental checkup combines a full clinical examination with professional cleaning (scaling and polishing). Regular checkups let small problems — a developing cavity, early gum inflammation, an old filling starting to fail — get caught and treated while they're still simple to manage, rather than after they've turned into pain or infection.
Signs You May Need This
- It has been six months or more since your last checkup
- Bleeding, swollen, or tender gums when brushing or flossing
- Visible plaque or tartar buildup, or persistent bad breath
- New sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet food and drink
- Any change in a tooth's colour, shape, or position that you've noticed
What Happens During Treatment
- 1Review of your medical and dental history and any concerns you'd like to raise
- 2Visual examination of teeth, gums, tongue, and soft tissues, including a check for signs of oral cancer
- 3Scaling to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, followed by polishing
- 4Dental X-rays if the dentist needs to check areas that aren't visible to the eye
- 5A summary of findings and, if needed, a recommendation for further treatment
What's Included
- Thorough examination of teeth and gum condition
- Removal of plaque and tartar (scaling)
- Tooth polishing
- Oral cancer screening
- Dental X-ray if required
- Dental health advice
Aftercare
- Mild gum sensitivity after scaling is normal and usually settles within a day or two
- Avoid very hot, cold, or acidic food and drink for a few hours if your teeth feel sensitive
- Keep brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day
- Follow any specific advice given for areas flagged during the exam
We recommend a checkup and cleaning every 6 months to maintain good dental health and catch problems early. Your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your individual gum health and cavity risk.
